Carmanah is a solar LED lighting company specializing in self-contained solar LED lighting systems for marine, aviation, traffic and off-grid lighting applications worldwide.

In business since 1996, Carmanah was the first company to develop the self-contained solar LED marine lantern for aids-to-navigation lighting. Working with the Canadian and U.S. coast guards, Carmanah solidly rooted itself in the development of solar LED lighting for marine applications, but it wasn’t long before the Company realized that this ruggedly built technology had applications beyond marking waterways.

Soon, Carmanah self-contained solar LED lighting was enabling new applications in the aviation, obstruction marking, and traffic industries. As LED technology improved, outdoor off-grid lighting applications also joined the Carmanah portfolio.

Today Carmanah has hundreds of thousands of installations worldwide in the markets we serve. Represented by a worldwide network of distributors, Carmanah has presence in its chosen markets across the globe.

Carmanah research and development, and corporate operations are headquartered in Victoria B.C. Canada, while manufacturing is done (in compliance with the Buy American act) in Houston, Texas with the Company’s manufacturing partner, Flextronics. All Carmanah products are manufactured to ISO 9001:2008 standards.

Carmanah has been a publicly traded company since 2001 on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol "CMH". Marine

Carmanah developed the very first solar LED lantern deployed by coast guards worldwide and has continued to work with maritime authorities and the marine industry to develop best-in-class, self-contained solar LED lights that meet the technical specifications and quality standards demanded by this highly-regulated market.

A strategic partnership with Finland-based marine lighting pioneer Sabik Oy, announced in March 2010, expands this portfolio of products to a complete range of aids-to-navigation lighting covering between one and 18 nautical miles under the Carmanah/Sabik brand.

Aviation & Obstruction

Deployed on military and commercial airfields worldwide, Carmanah solar LED aviation and obstruction lights are designed to provide airfield and obstruction lighting that operates independently of grid or generator power. Carmanah aviation lights provide reliable illumination for taxiways and runways that can be quickly and easily deployed, providing portable or permanent airfield lighting when and where needed. Carmanah obstruction lights provide marking for towers, cranes, bridges and other vertical obstructions that installs easily and requires no bulb changes.

A strategic partnership with ADB Airfield Solutions, LLC, announced in November 2009, is extending the reach of Carmanah solar power LED lighting solutions as part of the standard ADB product line. The combination of ADB LED products and “Powered by Carmanah” solar power management technology enables the deployment of a complete range of solar-powered airfield lighting solutions.

Off-Grid Lighting

Carmanah’s EverGEN product line is expanding quickly and providing outdoor solar power lighting solutions that function completely off-grid for applications such as parking lot, residential street lighting, pathway, perimeter, sign and other general area lighting applications.

Partnered with BetaLED the Carmanah EverGEN utilizes both THE EDGE and LEDway fixtures, providing a compact, self-contained solar LED lighting solution that meets lighting industry standards and guidelines. Featuring a patented energy management system that provides extended system operation and enhanced system performance, the EverGEN provides reliable off-grid lighting that is trusted by some of the world’s most recognizable organizations.

Traffic

Carmanah solar LED flashing beacons significantly improve the visibility of important safety signage and help alert drivers to the presence of pedestrian crossings, rail crossings and safety hazards.

A partnership with ENCOM, brings a wireless interface capability to the Carmanah line of solar power flashing beacons. Installed by DOTs, school districts, cities and municipalities around the world, Carmanah solar beacons provide reliable marking to even the most remote traffic hazards.

Carmanah Technology

Carmanah solar LED technology has always been employed for applications that depend on lighting for safety. The same technology principles that proved reliable in a harsh, open ocean environment for marine lighting applications have been carried across all product lines. All of the products offered by Carmanah benefit from the unique field conditions and experiences of the markets Carmanah serves. This varied knowledge and experience informs the design of new products ensuring mission-critical robustness and reliable performance in all operating conditions.

The Carmanah secret lies in our patented energy management system. Specifically engineered for the product and the job that product will be asked to perform, the energy management system is an integral part of every Carmanah solar LED lighting system.

The energy management system allows for compact, reliable solar LED lighting that adjust performance to suit local solar conditions which in turn protects battery health and prolongs the longevity of the system.

An energy management system provides for:

• The smallest system size with brightest light output – by ensuring efficient transfer and dynamic management of energy through collection at the solar panel to light output, system size is reduced and performance increased
• Performance in extreme conditions (i.e. solar panel shading, long periods of bad weather) – under poor conditions, Carmanah lights will conserve energy while still providing useful light and avoiding battery damage
• Protection of system health and longevity – batteries will not be deep cycled if the system experiences extreme conditions, and once conditions return to normal, the system quickly equalizes again without any adverse affect on the overall health of the system.
