What is an RSS feed?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based information technology for
distributing updated content quickly and regularly. RSS provides a convenient
way for Internet users to keep up with the latest headlines from their favorite
sites without having to visit each one of them to see what's new.
Web sites that have RSS feeds will show either the
or
icons on their web pages. You may also see the
appear in your address bar or a toolbar button at the top of your web
browser.
How does an RSS feed work?
To view RSS feeds on your computer, you will first need to install an RSS
reader, an RSS web module, or a desktop dashboard. All of these applications
will collect, update, and display any RSS feeds to which you've subscribed.
There are many free RSS sofware packages available online. Below are some
examples. We also suggest searching "free RSS readers" in your preferred search
engine for other options.
Examples of free RSS readers and portals:
Once you have your RSS application installed, you simply subscribe to any RSS feeds that are of interest on your favorite web sites. The process is similar to subscribing to a magazine - every time a new entry is published on one of your subscribed RSS feeds, an entry (title, small description and link) is added to your reader.
As an alternative to downloading a dedicated RSS reader, you can also add Carmanah's RSS feeds to your personal pages in popular portals such as
Google Personalized Home, My MSN,
My Yahoo!, etc.
